One Man's Dream
In 1995, Bob Skoglund left a great job that offered security and good pay to pursue his dream. He saw the need and an opportunity to bring something to a little river town. His dream was to open his own marina on the Illinois River at Havana, Illinois. He found the perfect piece of property along the riverfront in the North end of Havana, purchased it, and began clearing brush and preparing the land for what would eventually bring life to an otherwise vacant and empty area along the river.
Havana has great public boat ramps at Riverfront Park and ample parking for trucks and trailers, and it has long been a destination for pleasure boaters. A great place to visit, launch a boat, park your trailer and enjoy a beautiful day of recreation on the river. In addition to those who travel many miles to launch in Havana, much of the local community owns boats and enjoy recreation on the river. There was definitely a need for a marina.
In the year 2000, the digging and excavation began, and in the Spring of 2001, a small twelve slip marina opened! Every since the day that small marina opened at river mile 120.3 in Havana, Bob has been working on his dream. The marina has changed and improved every single year now featuring forty slips and a waiting list for seasonal slips. The Blue Heron Ships Store & Bar brings folks from far and wide, by land and by water to enjoy a refreshing beverage and relaxation on the beautiful docks. The atmosphere is absolutely fantastic.
When you love what you do, it doesn't seem so much like work. This statement holds true for Bob Skoglund. He is very passionate about his Marina, and truly brought the most unique space to Historic Havana Illinois.
